Wood is a natural material that we like to use in our interiors and gardens. It is also the most frequently chosen construction material, which is characterized by high durability and strength. Very popular are furniture, decorations and small architecture made of pine boards.

This is a raw material that is easy to obtain, and is elegant and impressive. However, an important aspect is proper care of the wood, i.e. proper maintenance and protection against pests. Learn about a few techniques to protect it.

Owners of houses based on wooden structure should take special care to protect it from pests. This also applies to owners of wooden gazebos, garden furniture, or even natural interior features. The raw material obtained by cutting pine belongs to the forest species, which are extremely often attacked by insects and parasites. Insects not only live in wood, but it is also their food source. To avoid uninvited guests, pine wood should be properly treated.

How to protect pine wood from pests?

Pine wood is commonly used in construction, furniture and interior design. It is distinguished by its high softness, which makes it easy to process. Unfortunately, lack of proper impregnation causes the wood to absorb moisture quickly. This is the perfect environment for pests, which can seriously damage our property. An excellent solution may be prior impregnation of wood, which allows you to preserve the beautiful appearance of pine material for years

The first steps in wood preservation

The best way to make sure your pine wood is properly protected is to protect the material from moisture. It is good practice to use previously dried material in construction. The next step is impregnation, which will make the wood will not soak up moisture and will be protected from pests.

Skipping the impregnation stage can result in very unpleasant consequences. The material not only becomes quickly damp, but can also be a breeding ground for mold, fungus and insects.

How to choose an impregnant for pine wood?

In the offer of DIY stores you can find a lot of impregnates dedicated to softwood, which is pine. When looking for the perfect product, you can choose between colorless and colored impregnates.

  1. First layer: clear impregnate (primer) – its task is to penetrate the structure of the wood. The product provides protection against insects, pests, and fungi. Priming impregnate makes the surface of pine boards is even, and moisture is much less absorbed.
  2. Second layer: color impregnation (decorative) – this type of impregnation protects the wood against fungi, insects, and other harmful factors such as UV rays

When should wood impregnation be repeated?

To make sure that the wood is properly protected against pests, you should impregnate it every few years. For subsequent impregnation, you can use a stain, which is a water-based product. As a rule, impregnations should be applied to wood at least once every 5 years.
