The first steps in wood preservation

The best way to make sure your pine wood is properly protected is to protect the material from moisture. It is good practice to use previously dried material in construction. The next step is impregnation, which will make the wood will not soak up moisture and will be protected from pests.

Skipping the impregnation stage can result in very unpleasant consequences. The material not only becomes quickly damp, but can also be a breeding ground for mold, fungus and insects.

How to choose an impregnant for pine wood?

In the offer of DIY stores you can find a lot of impregnates dedicated to softwood, which is pine. When looking for the perfect product, you can choose between colorless and colored impregnates.

  1. First layer: clear impregnate (primer) – its task is to penetrate the structure of the wood. The product provides protection against insects, pests, and fungi. Priming impregnate makes the surface of pine boards is even, and moisture is much less absorbed.
  2. Second layer: color impregnation (decorative) – this type of impregnation protects the wood against fungi, insects, and other harmful factors such as UV rays

When should wood impregnation be repeated?

To make sure that the wood is properly protected against pests, you should impregnate it every few years. For subsequent impregnation, you can use a stain, which is a water-based product. As a rule, impregnations should be applied to wood at least once every 5 years.
